General Introduction

A BIOLOGY CURRICULUM FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS: AN EXISTENTIAL APPROACH

Revising the Dutch secondary school biology curriculum from a pedagogical and developmental psychological perspective

THE RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY

This study was conceptualized and carried out by an educator and is intended to make a contribution to educational theory, and specifically to the discipline of teaching. The objective of the project is to propose a new design for the biology curriculum in Dutch secondary schools.
The point of departure for this project is the observation that, during adolescence, boys and girls begin to ask a fundamental, existential question that is not currently being addressed in their school curriculum. This dissertation aims to develop the foundations of a curriculum that responds to this existential question.
